Nelson Platform Bench from Living Edge

Originally designed by George Nelson for his own New York office, the Platform Bench was intended to provide a place for his materials as well as short-term guest seating.

The versatile bench also became a base for the modular Basic Cabinet Series. The series, which includes four chest-cabinet combinations, can be used with the Platform Bench or stand alone separately, in pairs or in groups of any number to fit multiple room applications.

“Nelson and his associate Ernest Farmer created a modular storage solution that could adapt to a variety of configurations and locations, including living, dining, sleeping, or working areas,” says Gregg Vander Kooi, product manager, Herman Miller. “They believed that properly designed modern furniture should be able to function anywhere.”

The Nelson Platform bench with metal legs will be available from Living Edge.  Visit www.livingedge.com.au or call 1300 132 154 for more details.

DESIGNER CHARLES WILSON COLLABORATES WITH KING FURNITURE

King Furniture revealed its latest piece, Andrea, at the State of Design Festival in Melbourne, which ran between 14 – 25 July this year. The new sofa was designed by Sydney-based designer Charles Wilson, in an exciting new external collaboration.

The design process for Andrea began two years ago, when King Furniture invited Wilson to enhance the collection with a new creation. Together they have created a new Australian design showcasing significant local innovation, a bold, sensual design aesthetic and expert technical knowledge.

Andrea has been designed to be completely modular with arm and back sections slotting into the frame using a unique locking mechanism. Several table designs have also been created that fit into the sofa to provide added functionality.

Wilson used simple mechanics to incorporate as much flexibility as possible, allowing Andrea’s form to be easily morphed into several different configurations. The result is a piece that combines comfort with contemporary style and adaptability.

STYLECRAFT TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND ARPER'S NUUR

Arper, Italy

Nuur 2009

Design Simon Pengelly

As you all know by now, we here at Monument love hearing about the process and inspiration behind the design.  Our friends at Stylecraft have given us an 'insider's view' into the mind of designer, Simon Pengally and his design inspiration behind the Nuur table system.

INSPIRATION: SIMON PENGALLY

Like the graceful dance of a prima ballerina, Nuur touches the ground lightly. Quiet in its complexity, understated yet resolute, Nuur is effortlessly universal and timeless.

 Inspiration:

Arper is the inspiration!

“As is usual with the work we do for Arper, the initial inspiration comes more from defining the essence of what is functionally required, for whom and at what cost.......imparting the material, ecological and technological scope that ultimately shapes the visual ‘spirit’....... this is why I make the statement that ‘Arper is the inspiration’.....so much of Arper s DNA comes from this approach.”

“With Nuur, the desire was to create a universal table ‘system’ based on the reduced principle of 4 corner legs, 4 rails and a top, the essence of a table and the combination of which offered in as many sizes, for as many applications and environments as possible. The aim of flexibility, or ‘system’, whilst at the forefront was meant to be a consequence of simplicity and reduction, rather than over complicating the visual language at the outset....the singular table being the most important but needing to be the intuitive ‘origin’ of all subsequent versions.”

“The structure, each line, curve and mass needed to work as one and have purpose, existing within the scope of production and material feasibility and within appropriate cost parameters. I’d like to think Nuur is a result of the sensitive amalgamation of all the above.”
